"My greatest fear was that she wasn't prepared — and that in all the excitement, safety would be the last thing anyone thought about."
"My granddaughter is going to college this year. And although we'll do our best to make sure all of our I's are dotted and T's are crossed — she'll still be in this world for the first time, alone."
That's where this guide begins. Not in a boardroom. Not with a marketing team. But with a grandmother sitting at her kitchen table, searching the internet for answers — and finding that they didn't exist.
I searched. And searched. I found lists of dorm room essentials. I found packing guides and roommate etiquette articles. But when I looked for something that would help me feel truly prepared — something that covered the legal forms, the safety plans, the emergency contacts, the conversations we needed to have together before she left — I came up empty.
There was no single, comprehensive guide that brought it all together. Not one place I could point a worried parent — or grandparent — and say: start here.
So I built it.
Not because I'm an expert. But because I'm a family member who loves a young person deeply and refused to accept that this resource didn't exist. I gathered everything: the FERPA and HIPAA forms that parents lose access to at age 18, the Safe Word System, the emergency planning, the products worth buying, the hotlines worth knowing, the conversations worth having.
Twenty-one pages. Everything I wish someone had handed me the moment I realized my granddaughter was really going.
This guide is for the parents who are up late Googling "what do I need before college move-in day" and not finding real answers. It's for the moms who feel the pride and the terror at the same time. It's for the dads quietly adding items to an Amazon cart. It's for the grandparents, the aunts and uncles, the mentors — everyone who loves a college student and wants them to be safe.
You may not need everything in this guide. Every family's situation is different. Every campus is different. Every student is different. But it's a starting point — and sometimes that's the most important thing.
I pray you find it helpful. I pray your college student steps into this next chapter feeling confident, prepared, and safe.
And I pray that on drop-off day, you drive away knowing you did everything you could.
This isn't just a product. It's a point of view about what every college family deserves to know.
Every section exists because a family somewhere needed it and couldn't find it. Here's what's waiting for yours.
